Crissy Goes OFF!!!

Posted on 2008.04.05 by Kevin Kan.

Today at Crissy was all time. Probably my best day of sailing there EVER. What started out as a kind of flukey, underpowered, choppy mess turned into gold as I headed outside the Gate. Huge wind, huge glassy swell, huge huckers, huge puffs. It was totally intense. Was on the Combat 4.7 and the Fanatic Free Wave 77 (which rocked)... could have been on 3.7 easy. It was like windsurfing among moving mountains. I haven't jumped that high in a long time. So, the lesson learned is always to do the "tour" at Crissy before settling in on sailing one area. It's so diverse and expansive... one area is probably going off, and you'll miss it if you don't look for it.

I was out there too, but only to close to the GGB on the inside. I chickened out as I was getting mauled on my 5.2 and Exocet Cross 117 (I weigh 202lbs, 91kg).

The downwind was positively terrifying and I spent a lot of time swimming.

Still and all, a fabulous day!

when Kevin yelled at my in the water "Lets go to the bridge" I didn't even think twice about it although I had never done that trip before. It was awesome and scary at the same time, once we were at the other side of the bridge it was like another place, brutally overpowered in 4.7 Combat and 84 JP FSW. The swell was from another world and the ebb was pulling you out pretty hard, I had my hands full. I was trying to enjoy the condicions but there was always a bit of a scare factor in the back of my mind, what if I break something here? what if the wind drops? I could see three other sails not too close not too far, I recognized Kevin's sail downwind from me a couple of times but the place was so empty and so vaste compared to Crissy. One of those situations where you are enjoying a very frightening experience.

The downwinder back to Crissy was another story, scary overpowered, spinning out of control fighting the ebb, my legs were burning, still are...oh well, that was something

I used to only go to Crissy when the forecast was for 20+ and the ebb was flowing, mostly because I weigh 215lbs. I've since learned that there are so many micro aspect to Crissy wind forecasts, tides, timing of tides, etc., that you just need to go there a lot a learn how to work it. It takes time, maybe years. But yesterday was actually fairly predictable. Both Godsey (iWindsurf) and NOAA called for early than usual winds. Yet few people caught the windies part of the day (1:30 -3:00). Some people may have been waiting for the ebb--another rookie mistake. The swell can be great on the inside half of the bay in the last hour of a flood, especially when there's a west/nw wind direction. So you could have caught sweet swell and air inside the gate right at Anita Rock yesterday, before most people were out. Then, when the wind got funky up/down as predicted in the bay, you had the ebb in full force to easily get outstide the gate and watch Kevin masterfully handle intense conditions while some of us, speaking for myself in particular, got basically worked. Keep studying the forecasts and tides in retrospect, and take the tours, and you'll get way more killers sessions than you can imagine at Crissy.

I wish there was a good way to predict where the "spot" is. I have had some incredible gorge-like sessions by the North Tower. Lately it hasn't been good up there. Sometimes it's so nasty in the middle I stay inside where it's flat. Maybe just look for Kevin's sail, if he stays in one place for 20 minutes, follow him?

Kev is right about the "tour". One thing about Crissy is that is so incredibly variable in any given day and most often unpredictable in terms of what it does based on wind speed, tides, etc...I'm kicking myself for not have followed you guys further up; I felt underpowered and thought it would be lighter there as past mid bay it was definitely lighter. So I had the usual confused chop and erratic winds on the inside like most everybody else...lesson learned!
Where do we go today? Berk might be a good bet but too early to tell

Matt and i got in my car with all kind of gear heading to the CF, but a few reasons stopped us from joining you guys:
-Berkeley picked up
-Traffic on the weekend on the way to CF and on the water
-Even more traffic on the water because of the swap meet.
-I hate Crissy when crowded and i hated even more when choppy and today is the day for both.

Glad for you Kevin and Kike you guys got a buzz out of Crissy, It sounds extremely epic and appealing to my taste but i doubt i'll hangout outside of the gate for more than 2 min, @ 4knts of ebb i'll be at the Farallones in 45 min. Definitely a living bait.

I wish more of Team Dawg was here today to enjoy the goods. Crissy frustrates the hell out of me sometimes, but it's incredibly special when it's good. Juan, Isa, Damis, Krzysztof, and Enrique all showed up today, but only Kike got a taste of the goods outside the gate. This was the most intense sailing experience I've had in recent memory... pure white knuckle windsurfing (in a good way). These are the kinds of days you remember.

The 40 minutes of flakas and vulcans in Berkeley was OK as well.
